Biography
Nate
Pagel was born in 1968 and was raised in California and New York. He began
his studies and early career in the sciences studying engineering. His
work in the arts began at Rice University in Houston, Texas in painting
and photography. At the University of Sydney, while fulfilling a Rotary
Foundation Scholarship for International Understanding, he completed several
installation and conceptual/sculptural works that were exhibited at the
Tin Sheds Gallery in Sydney, Australia.
In
1994, while working for Apple Computer in Austin, Texas, Nate began experimenting
with computer-based multimedia as art work. He moved to creating interactive
CD-ROM experiences and web sites for a variety of firms in Texas and California
while developing expertise with digital video and effects. This work has
in total garnered over 40 industry awards. During this time, Nate began
collaborating on virtual reality and teleconferencing projects with the
Electronic Café International in Santa Monica, California and University
of Texas Professors Marcos Novak and Allucquere
Roseanne "Sandy" Stone.
His
collaborations with the Sharir Dance Company, using video in conjunction
with interactive technology and live performance were performed for audiences
internationally. In addition to compositions for traditional video, his
work also involves various media encompassing theater, dance, sound, graphics,
the web and interactive CD-ROM and DVD.
Nate
Pagel contributes to artistic projects that incorporate video, sound,
graphics, multimedia, the Internet, virtual reality, videoconferencing
and other interactive technologies. He specializes in conceptual work,
video production, effects, lighting and stage design.

Teaching
Pagel has taught individual, University of Texas courses to college students
in The Department of Theatre and Dances Animation Class and Radio-Television-Films
Cyberspace and the Arts. He recently completed teaching classes for the
Institute for Digital and Performing Arts in San Jose, Costa Rica. The
culmination of these classes was a staged performance, incorporating video
shot of the rainforest, that was featured on the front page of the national
newspaper, La Nacion, as well as on the three major TV news networks.
Additional video material adapted from the rainforests of Costa Rica was
shown at the Natural World Museums premiere gala in October 2004
in an event presided over by US House of Representatives Democratic Leader
and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, US Senator Barbara Boxer and San Francisco
Mayor Gavin Newsom.
Pagel was a founding board member of the Austin Area Multimedia Alliance,
and was a board member of the Austin Community College Multimedia Advisory
Council.
Panels
He has spoken on several panels including South by Southwest (with Thomas
Dolby) in Austin, SIGGRAPH in Los Angeles, GenArt (with Lynn Herschmann)
in San Francisco, and the Natural World Museum (with Bernie Krause) in
San Francisco, and Digital Video in New York. He has also lectured internationally,
most recently at the Arts University of Nagoya, Japan on Meida Art and
Activism (October 2005).
Residency
Pagel completed a residency at the Djerassi
Resident Artists Program during the 2005 season.

and Turku, Finland (video). It was mixed live on the web. The remote
participants were:
1) Live from the studios of London Musicians' Collective: Lol Coxhill
(saxophone), Michael Kosmides (theremins) and Knut Aufermann (glove
and live electronics)
2) Finnish art students from Turku Conservatory and Turku Polytechnic
who created a dance video piece for Finnish winter landscape under
direction of choreographer Satu Tuittila and co-ordination by Kai
Lehikoinen, Head of Performing Arts, Turku Polytechnic, Faculty
of Performing Arts.

As one of several instructor-artists, responsible for leading 18 high
school children in a recent project to build an interactive playroom for
kids (and adults) at the Austin Childrens Museum. Specifically,
lectured on topics concerning multimedia production while shooting video
(with the kids) for a documentary on the process.
SXSW,
Inc.
Austin, TX
January through March 1995
One of the four main organizers of 1995's SXSW Multimedia Conference in
Austin. Garnered extensive experience in large event planning, management
and administration. Organized the Internet Theater with 16 individual
tutorials as well as several panels for the multimedia track while acting
as the panelist liaison for SXSW. Arranged Internet and videoconfererencing
connectivity for the Hyatt Regency and Austin Convention Center via sponsorship
from Southwestern Bell and VideoCall and produced three live videoconferenced
events with San Francisco, Paris and the New Media Expo in Los Angeles.
Continued to consult and serve on several panels for the 1996, 1997 and
1998 Multimedia/ Interactive Festivals.
